The Sergeant Major Douglas R. Drum Memorial Scholarship Fund was developed to honor and commemorate Sergeant Major Drum, founder and the first National President of AMRA. Sergeant Drum had a sincere appreciation of education and its use as a tool of transition for our youth and retirees.
Scholarships are awarded to qualified applicants at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee. Those eligible for a scholarship are current members of AMRA, his/her dependent, child, or grandchild who is pursuing a degree as an accredited college or university. The Scholarship must be used for tuition, books, or room and board.
Steve Donner - from Troy, Illinois will be attending Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Missouri. His courses of study are Criminal Justice and Mathematics, Pre-Law Scholar with a minor in Russian. “..…I believe that this scholarship recipient should embody an endless amount of passion and drive committed to hard work and excellence. Thus, in a sense, this scholarship eternalizes that living spirit, which will be passed down to future recipients, who embody the same passionate fortitude, which in my case, strives to improve our nation.”

Thomas Hall - from Marietta, Georgia will be attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. His course of study will be Business Administration. “The most rewarding thing I have ever done was working with young kids at “The Wellness Community” of Atlanta whose parents have cancer. ......I could understand the fear and uncertainty they had inside and helped them deal with it.”

Ashley Martinez - from Killeen, Texas will be attending Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Her course of study will be Nursing. “I am dedicated to what I get involved in; I am a hard worker who refuses to fail in anything I attempt. The door has been opened and I am starting my walk to accomplish my dream of becoming an Army nurse and saving the lives of my countrymen.”

Elizabeth Hall - from Marietta, Georgia will be attending Pitzer College in Claremont, California. Her course of study will be Sociology. “I have always been drawn to community service. It was personally very rewarding for me and catalyzed me into organizing and leading 'Teen Rap' where teenagers whose parents had cancer could meet and share their experiences in a relatable environment.”

Alyssa Hodnefield - from Battle Lake, Minnesota will be attending Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota. Her course of study will be Teacher Licensure for Visual Arts. “Ultimately, my career goal is to teach art at a small community college. Thus, my passion in life is for art: creating, teaching and especially learning about it. .....I would love to help develop children's interest in art and becoming imaginative.”

Kristin Jones - from Havre de Grace, Maryland will be attending Towson University in Towson, Maryland. Her course of study will be Early Childhood Education. “I wish to become a teacher of children because I want to help them in any way possible and enhance their learning abilities. Some adults say I possess a gift in relating to and motivating children to perform, so I wish to utilize this gift.”

Carol Lohman - from Muskegon, Michigan will be attending Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. Her course of study will be Nursing. “Daily occurrences constantly reinforce my determination to be in the medical world alleviating fear and suffering for children. I visualize myself in pink scrubs with a stethoscope, checking a child’s vital signs and soothing their fears.”

Her course of study will be Business Management. “In addition to learning the values of leadership, teamwork and generosity, I have developed a passion for giving back to my community. Although it has been challenging to maintain such a high standard of academic achievement, I have continually pushed myself and stayed focused even throughout times of adversity.”

Her courses of study will be in Spanish, Medical Imaging and Immunology. “Standing out as a distinguished student among a sea of aspiring academics requires a solid educational background and a lot of drive for the future. Without self-motivation and a vision for the future, my goals seem unattainable, but my ability to maintain a view of, and dedication to, what is to come makes it possible.”

Jeremy Plambeck - from Salem, Oregon will be attending the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls. His course of study will be Medical Imaging. “It has always been my plan, since before I can remember, to attend college and obtain a degree and create for myself a promising future. .....I will work in a hospital as a Medical Technician in my community and slowly progress until I can become a specialist in MRI.”

Amber Halavats - from Troy, Missouri will be attending Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Missouri. Her course of study will be Clinical Laboratory Science. “Each summer since I graduated high school, I worked a different job, not because the work was hard but because I wanted to continually experience something new. .....I have been interning at the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department Crime Laboratory Division, walking in the footsteps of their biologists and analysts. .....I need all the help I can get on my journey to scientifically bring evildoers to justice.”

His courses of study will be Worship Arts and Music Performance. “My desire is to impact the lives of others with a message of faith and hope, and the challenge to live a life of integrity. It's often so easy to judge those we don't understand, slapping labels on them such as addicts or alcoholics. For me, really looking people in the eye and seeing them as people instead of a "project" has been a life changing experience.”
