AMRA MISSION STATEMENT
"The American Military Retirees Association (AMRA) encourages military retirees to band together to protect earned benefits by educating on benefits available and advocating for the protection of earned benefits through active monitoring of legislation in the U.S. Congress and the policies and proposals of the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs."

The American Military Retirees Association (AMRA) was formed in 1973 in the Village of Saranac Lake in Franklin County, New York. Currently, the National Headquarters is located in Plattsburgh, New York.
The four main purposes of AMRA are:
- To protect and preserve the vested rights, benefits and privileges of military personnel.
- To provide a means to sponsor, foster, and encourage legislation affecting the status of all military retired personnel regardless of rank.
- To foster the welfare of survivors and dependent children of retired military personnel.
- To provide a means of social contact for all members and their families.
In addition, AMRA raises funds for our memorial scholarship fund and other worthwhile projects. Also, AMRA is consistently searching to add new benefits to its strong member benefits program. Please consider joining us to continue this work.
Please look around the AMRA website and contact us if you have any questions.

Member action does make a difference!
AMRA appreciates the calls made to Senators and Congressmen with regards to the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act which provides for beneficiary access to preventive and mental health services, enhances low-income benefit programs and maintains access to care in rural areas, including pharmacy access, among other purposes. Of great importance to AMRA members was the issue of physician reimbursement which, if this bill had been defeated, could have resulted in a reduced number of physicians accepting Medicare and TRICARE.
President Bush vetoed the bill on July 15th and Congress reacted immediately…overriding the President’s veto by a margin of 70-26 in the Senate and 383-41 in the House, and enacting the bill into law.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs
Dr. James B. Peake attends
Town Hall Meeting
At the invitation of Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Secretary Peake spoke at a Town Hall Meeting in Burlington, VT on June 23rd. Over 100 veterans (including representatives of AMRA, American Legion, DAV, Purple Heart, VFW and a contingent from the Vermont National Guard) listened to Dr. Peake’s remarks and then took full advantage of the Town Hall Meeting style to question Dr. Peake on a variety of issues, most notably health care, case backlogs, PTSD and the suicide rate for returning troops. Attending on behalf of AMRA were National Board Member Fred Gilman and Executive Director Peg Bergeron. Steven W. Bowman, Clinton County Veterans Service Agency Director was also in attendance.
